A fractional COO role partnering with two managing partners at a small law firm to strengthen operations, grow the estate planning practice, and implement AI tools across legal and administrative workflows.
The Franchise & Business Law Group is seeking an experienced fractional COO to work directly with its two managing partners. The core focus is converting partner priorities into completed work, freeing partner time for client service, and building the operational foundations the firm needs for its next stage of growth.
Three priorities anchor the engagement: leading recruitment and onboarding for one to two additional attorneys, building the marketing, referral, and intake processes needed to grow the estate planning practice, and evaluating and implementing approved AI tools with appropriate training, confidentiality safeguards, and attorney oversight. Beyond those priorities, the role covers billing and collections improvement, KPI reporting, staff accountability, workflow documentation, and consistent use of existing tools including Clio, Monday.com, and Microsoft 365.
- Lead recruiting and onboarding for one to two additional attorneys, ensuring new hires receive the training and support to succeed
- Build and coordinate marketing, referral, and client intake processes to grow the estate planning practice
- Evaluate and implement approved AI tools for legal and administrative workflows, establishing training, confidentiality protections, and effectiveness measures
- Improve billing and collections processes and develop useful KPI reporting across the firm
- Lead staff accountability meetings, clarify responsibilities, and document recurring procedures
- Turn partner decisions into action plans with clear owners and deadlines, coordinating approved marketing and business development initiatives
- Demonstrated experience leading operations in a small law firm or comparable professional services business
- Specific examples of operational improvements personally implemented, with measurable outcomes
- Working knowledge of staffing, recruiting, professional services finances, client intake, and process improvement
- Ability to secure team buy-in, coach experienced professionals, and address performance issues constructively
- Comfortable doing hands-on implementation work including configuring systems, building reports, and managing recruiting pipelines
- Sound judgement regarding confidentiality and the boundaries between operational leadership and legal decision-making
