The fractional product seniority ladder

Product titles are the least consistent in the market, so read scope rather than name. A Chief Product Officer owns product strategy at company level: the portfolio, the bets, and the story investors hear. A VP of Product leads several product teams and the managers running them, and is accountable for the function performing rather than for one product shipping. A Head of Product owns one product or business line hands on, doing the discovery and prioritisation themselves, which is the right level for a single team. The trigger between the last two is simply the second product team: below it a VP is over-specified, above it a Head of Product ends up coordinating peers without the authority to do it. Beside the ladder sit the specialists who make product decisions measurable and usable: a product analyst answers whether what you shipped worked, and design leadership owns whether it holds together. Most companies hire a product manager when the gap was a product leader, and discover the difference a year later in what got built.

What fractional product leaders cost

Fractional product leadership is bought by the day, so cost scales with seniority and days per week rather than a salary band plus equity. A Head of Product two days a week costs a fraction of a CPO at the same cadence, which is the point: you buy the level the problem sits at. Fractional vs interim vs full time product leadership

Fractional is part time and ongoing: one to three days a week, building the practice and lifting the team over months. Interim is full time and temporary, covering an empty seat through a departure or a search, so see interim CPO if the seat is empty rather than undefined. Full time is for when product leadership is a daily workload, which usually arrives once there are several teams and a portfolio to hold together.
