Fractional Firm Advisors is seeking an experienced fractional COO to provide contract, remote operational leadership to midsize law firms. The successful candidate will act as a trusted advisor to managing partners, assessing current operations, identifying gaps, and designing practical process improvements suited to each firm's size and culture.
Day-to-day work spans overseeing operational initiatives, optimising staffing and resource allocation, improving matter intake and case management processes, and coordinating with finance and HR to support firm-wide performance. The role may also involve leading technology modernisation efforts, developing compliance frameworks and operational policies, and preparing clear, data-informed recommendations for firm leadership across multiple client engagements in a fully remote environment.
- Assess current operations, systems, and workflows at client law firms and identify practical improvement opportunities
- Oversee implementation of operational initiatives and monitor progress against performance goals
- Optimise staffing models, resource allocation, and matter intake and case management processes
- Coordinate with finance and HR functions to support budgeting, profitability analysis, and collections
- Lead or support technology modernisation efforts and develop operational policies and compliance frameworks
- Manage multiple client engagements simultaneously, adapting solutions to each firm's culture and communicating clearly with senior stakeholders
- Demonstrated operations leadership experience within law firms or comparable professional services organisations
- Strong skills in process improvement, workflow design, and organisational efficiency
- Proficiency in financial and operational metrics including budgeting, profitability analysis, and collections support
- Experience with law firm practice management systems, CRM tools, and legal technology platforms
- Proven ability to manage change, align stakeholders, and communicate complex information to non-technical audiences
- Bachelor's degree in business, finance, accounting, or a related field; MBA or equivalent experience preferred
