Job Details

Carnegie Mellon University's Division of Student Affairs is seeking an Interim Executive Director to lead Counseling and Psychological Services (CaPS), a core unit within the Community Health and Well-Being portfolio. The successful candidate will serve as the primary mental health authority on campus, providing visible and collaborative leadership across the department, the division, and the broader university community.

During the interim period, the director will ensure continuity of care, maintain operational and fiscal rigour, and foster a culturally responsive environment suited to CMU's diverse and high-achieving student population. Responsibilities span strategic planning, clinical administration, crisis coordination, policy oversight, staff supervision, and active campus engagement through outreach and referral partnerships.

Job Responsibilities
  • Establish departmental priorities in partnership with the Associate Vice President of Community Health and Well-Being
  • Supervise key clinical and administrative leaders, including associate and assistant directors, and oversee secondary supervision structures across all staff
  • Coordinate crisis intervention response systems and provide clinical back-up for on-call clinicians as required
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and ongoing assessment of departmental policies, workflows, and clinical protocols
  • Represent CaPS on university committees and cross-campus initiatives, including the Care Team and Behaviour Intervention Team
  • Manage the departmental budget and ensure compliance with university policies, professional standards, and accreditation requirements
Job Requirments
  • Advanced degree in clinical or counselling psychology (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) required
  • Independent clinical licensure as a Licensed Psychologist in Pennsylvania, or eligibility for licensure within one year
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive administrative and clinical experience in a mental health setting, including at least 8 years in a senior supervisory or leadership role
  • Demonstrated experience in collegiate mental health, crisis management, clinical supervision, and oversight of budgets exceeding $1 million
  • Proven ability to work effectively with diverse student populations, including international students, underrepresented minorities, and LGBTQ+ individuals
  • Successful background check required prior to commencement
