Fractional CTO (Full Time Role)

SMB Team serves a portfolio of law firm owner clients and is expanding its internal team of Fractional CTOs. The successful candidate will conduct Phase 1 AI Readiness Assessments, including technology audits, data infrastructure mapping, compliance reviews, and tool demonstrations. Beyond initial engagements, they will manage ongoing Phase 2 retainer relationships, providing monthly check-ins, AI tool adoption oversight, and light IT and security support.

The role requires staying current on the legal AI landscape, tools such as Harvey, Clio Duo, Copilot for M365, and Casetext, and contributing reusable templates and playbooks to the team's shared practice library. This is a full-time internal hire, not an independent consulting arrangement, and carries an annual salary of $150,000 to $160,000 based on experience.

• Conduct Phase 1 AI Readiness Assessments covering technology audits, data infrastructure mapping, compliance reviews, and final report delivery
• Deliver AI coaching sessions per engagement and serve as on-call AI advisor for Phase 2 retainer clients
• Maintain ongoing retainer relationships through monthly check-ins, dashboard upkeep, and AI tool adoption oversight
• Manage client pipeline in coordination with the sales team and support pre-sales scoping and proposal preparation
• Stay current on legal AI tooling and update the recommended technology stack as the landscape evolves
• Document all client-facing work and contribute reusable templates and playbooks to the shared practice library

• 5+ years in a technology leadership role such as CTO, VP Engineering, or Director of IT, with client-facing or consulting experience preferred
• Demonstrated hands-on experience with AI tools and workflows, including generative AI in professional services contexts
• Ability to independently conduct credible technology and data infrastructure audits, with comfort across cloud platforms and integration tooling
• Clear communicator who can explain AI concepts to non-technical law firm leadership without jargon or condescension
• Familiarity with the legal technology landscape, including tools such as Clio, NetDocuments, Harvey, and Casetext
• Available for client-facing work during standard business hours, with occasional willingness to travel to client sites
