Fractional Chief Technology Officer / Technology Advisor

Just A Start is seeking a fractional CTO to serve as the organisation's internal technology expert and trusted advisor. The role focuses on evaluating technology needs, overseeing vendor relationships, and developing a practical IT strategy suited to a mission-driven nonprofit. The successful candidate will work alongside leadership and the external IT provider to ensure decisions are well-informed, cost-effective, and aligned with operational requirements.

This is a part-time contractor engagement, performed primarily remotely with occasional on-site visits to offices in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Scope and schedule will be determined based on organisational needs and candidate availability. The role reports to the Director of Finance and Administration.

• Assess current technology environment and develop a practical IT roadmap aligned with organisational priorities and security requirements.
• Oversee vendor relationships, reviewing proposals, service levels, and project plans from the external IT provider and other technology suppliers.
• Provide guidance on cybersecurity practices, data protection, access controls, and compliance, including the development of relevant technology policies.
• Serve as an internal consultant for technology-related planning and decision-making, translating technical concepts for non-technical leadership.
• Provide high-level project oversight for technology upgrades, system changes, and infrastructure improvements, monitoring progress and stakeholder communication.
• Participate in the annual review of the IT service provider's proposed budget, offering strategic recommendations to ensure alignment with organisational needs.

• Significant experience in IT leadership, technology strategy, systems management, or cybersecurity in a senior advisory capacity.
• Demonstrated ability to evaluate vendor recommendations, contracts, and service levels on behalf of an organisation.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information clearly to non-technical audiences.
• Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices, data privacy, device management, and organisational risk management.
• Familiarity with Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, cloud-based systems, and endpoint management required.
• Experience working with nonprofits or mission-driven small to mid-sized organisations preferred.
