Full-Time Fractional Controller for Construction Industry Clients
Vessel Advisors seeks a remote fractional Controller with deep construction and real estate development experience to manage financial operations, reporting, and compliance across multiple client entities.
This role supports multiple construction and real estate development clients concurrently, taking ownership of month-end close schedules, financial discovery assessments, accounting clean-up, budgeting, and forecasting. The Controller manages multi-entity fund structures, oversees outsourced payroll across multiple states, and ensures compliance with construction financing requirements including bank draw management and lien release tracking.
The position reports to Vessel Advisors' VP of Operations and liaises directly with client leadership, construction teams, and external accounting or tax partners. The ideal candidate brings 8 or more years of Controller experience in private construction businesses, proficiency with cloud-based financial software, and a track record of working effectively in remote environments.
- Take full ownership of month-end close schedules across multiple client entities, transitioning manual workbooks to system-driven reporting
- Lead financial discovery assessments to identify accounting clean-up needs and process improvements for high-revenue client organisations
- Manage the interface between client leadership, construction teams, and outsourced tax or accounting firms to ensure accurate expense coding
- Develop and maintain property-level performance metrics and financial models suitable for institutional equity partners
- Oversee cash management controls, including lien release and waiver tracking to prevent revenue leakage
- Manage construction loan bank draw processes, ensuring timely and accurate spend reporting
- 8 or more years of experience as a Controller or Chief Accounting Officer in private construction or real estate development businesses
- Deep expertise in construction financing, bank draw management, WIP schedules, and budget-to-actual job cost reporting
- Proficiency in Sage Intacct and QuickBooks required; experience with Deltek ComputerEase, Procore, and Bill.com is advantageous
- Demonstrated ability to manage finance and accounting across multi-entity fund structures, including multi-state outsourced payroll oversight
- At least three years of experience working remotely, with a professional setup for virtual client meetings
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with comfort operating primarily through Slack and email
