Chief Financial Officer (Fractional)

Wharton Arts, a nonprofit arts organisation operating four core programmes across three New Jersey locations, is looking for a fractional CFO to work closely with the President and CEO. The organisation manages an annual budget of approximately $4 million and employs around 138 staff serving 2,000 students each year through community music and creative youth development programmes.

The fractional CFO will be responsible for financial strategy, monthly reporting, and risk oversight, while helping prepare for a planned 2028-29 facilities consolidation. This is a part-time engagement at approximately 15 hours per week, requiring a CPA with nonprofit and real estate transition experience.

• Lead the annual budgeting process and produce monthly financial forecasts.
• Manage restricted and unrestricted fund allocation across programme, fundraising, and administrative categories.
• Prepare monthly financial reports for the Finance Committee and Board of Trustees.
• Oversee the monthly financial close, reviewing and approving all adjusting and closing entries.
• Manage the annual audit and coordinate federal and state regulatory filings with external auditors.
• Monitor organisational risk and insurance coverage, and maintain the banking relationship.

• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation required.
• Demonstrated experience with real estate or facilities transitions.
• Prior nonprofit financial management experience.
• Competency in scenario analysis and financial modelling.
• Ability to support development teams with grant budget preparation.

Wharton Arts is a New Jersey-based nonprofit comprising four programmes: the Performing Arts School, New Jersey Youth Symphony, Paterson Music Project, and New Jersey Youth Chorus.
