An interim IT Director role onsite in Washington, DC, leading technology strategy, cybersecurity, infrastructure, and AI governance for a mission-driven public policy nonprofit.
Addison Group is partnering with a well-established public policy nonprofit headquartered in Washington, DC to place an interim IT Director. This is a hands-on leadership position covering technology strategy, cybersecurity, infrastructure reliability, and day-to-day IT operations. The successful candidate will work closely with the COO and senior leadership while also being willing to operate at a practical, delivery-focused level alongside a small, close-knit team.
Key areas of ownership include developing a multiyear technology roadmap, running the organisation's cybersecurity and incident response program, overseeing enterprise systems and vendor contracts, managing the technology budget, and establishing a responsible AI governance framework. The role requires someone comfortable balancing strategic advisory responsibilities with direct operational involvement. Five days onsite in Washington, DC is required.
- Develop and execute a multiyear technology roadmap aligned with organisational priorities and mission
- Lead the cybersecurity program including identity and access management, endpoint protection, and incident response
- Oversee enterprise systems across finance, HR, CRM, and knowledge management platforms
- Establish a responsible AI governance framework and set standards for safe, ethical use of AI tools
- Manage the technology operating and capital budget, negotiate vendor contracts, and identify cost reduction opportunities
- Coach and develop the IT team, supporting cross-training, documentation, and succession planning
- 10 or more years of progressive IT experience, including at least 6 years in a managerial role
- Demonstrated experience leading technology across strategy, cybersecurity, enterprise systems, infrastructure, and vendor management
- Working knowledge of cloud and SaaS environments, identity and access management, and cybersecurity operations
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences
- Collaborative, low-ego leadership style with a willingness to operate hands-on when required
- Familiarity with frameworks such as NIST, ITIL, or ISO 27001 is advantageous
