Interim Executive Director
An interim Executive Director to stabilise operations and provide financial stewardship for a multi-jurisdictional regional planning commission in Virginia during an executive transition of six to nine months.
The Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission requires an interim Executive Director to lead day-to-day operations during an executive transition period of approximately six to nine months. The role carries responsibility for organisational stabilisation, financial management, and operational assessment, with a focus on improving transparency, consistency, and accountability across the commission's programmes.
Working closely with the outgoing Executive Director to facilitate knowledge transfer, the appointee will evaluate existing processes, develop Standard Operating Procedures, support budget development, and strengthen government fund accounting practices. The position is full-time and onsite in West Point, Virginia, with the potential to convert to a permanent placement. Travel of approximately 20% is required.
- Oversee daily operations and provide senior executive leadership to a multidisciplinary team of planners and technical staff.
- Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures to improve consistency, efficiency, and accountability across the organisation.
- Support budget development, fund accounting, government accounting, financial analysis, and financial reporting.
- Act as primary spokesperson for regional interests and build consensus among member jurisdictions.
- Facilitate structured knowledge transfer with the retiring Executive Director while providing independent organisational direction.
- Apply cost-benefit analysis and sustainability principles to assess and improve operational and financial performance.
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Public Administration, Planning, or a related field with a finance concentration.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive senior management experience in a government, public-sector, or non-profit environment.
- Demonstrated experience leading organisations through transitions, change management, or stabilisation periods.
- Strong understanding of fund accounting, government accounting, budgeting, and financial analysis.
- Proven ability to assess organisational challenges quickly and implement practical, effective solutions.
- MBA or Master of Public Administration preferred; familiarity with contract law and public-sector revolving loan programmes is an advantage.
