A part-time interim Controller role with a well-established nonprofit, providing hands-on financial leadership across accounting operations, grant accounting, reporting, budgeting, and audit coordination during a transitional period.
Dahl Consulting is partnering with a well-established nonprofit that delivers community-based services helping individuals and families build financial stability. The organisation requires a part-time interim Controller to lead financial operations during a transitional period, covering month-end close, grant and restricted fund management, budgeting support, payroll oversight, and audit coordination. The role also encompasses staff supervision and process improvement to strengthen internal controls.
This is a contract engagement of approximately two to three months, based in Plymouth, MN, with onsite or hybrid arrangements available after an initial training period. The role suits an experienced accounting professional comfortable in mission-driven environments who can step in quickly and deliver reliable financial insights to organisational leadership.
- Lead the monthly financial close process, including account reconciliations, variance analysis, and reporting for leadership and board meetings.
- Manage grant accounting, restricted funds, and endowment activity in compliance with donor and funder requirements.
- Support annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning in partnership with executive leadership and programme managers.
- Coordinate the annual audit and IRS Form 990 preparation with external auditors and tax professionals.
- Oversee payroll approval, invoice review, and cash receipt and reconciliation activities.
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff and identify process improvements to strengthen financial operations and internal controls.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, with at least five years of accounting and financial management experience.
- Strong knowledge of general accounting principles, financial reporting, and month-end close processes.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and solid proficiency with accounting systems and databases.
- Excellent analytical, organisational, and communication skills with high attention to detail.
- CPA designation preferred, along with nonprofit accounting experience including grant and restricted fund accounting.
- Experience with audit support, Form 990 preparation, endowment accounting, and nonprofit software such as Financial Edge is advantageous.
