Interim Controller (Sage Intacct)

Cherry Bekaert Recruiting is placing an Interim Controller for a six-month contract with a Washington, DC-based nonprofit client. The engagement is hybrid, with two days onsite per week and three days remote. The role carries full ownership of accounting operations, financial reporting, and audit readiness during a critical period for the organisation.

The controller will oversee the complete close cycle, manage AP, AR and grants accounting teams, coordinate external audit activities, and deliver budgeting and forecasting support. A secondary focus is reviewing and strengthening internal controls and identifying process improvements across the finance function to lift efficiency and accuracy.

• Lead monthly, quarterly and year-end close processes from start to completion
• Prepare and review accurate, timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP
• Supervise AP, AR and grants accounting functions and the staff supporting them
• Coordinate with external auditors and manage all annual audit activities
• Perform budget-to-actual and variance analysis to support executive decision-making
• Review and strengthen accounting policies, internal controls and documented procedures

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
• 7+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience
• Prior experience as a Controller or Assistant Controller
• Strong working knowledge of Sage Intacct
• Demonstrated ability to manage month-end close and financial reporting cycles
• Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical and communication abilities
