This part-time Finance Director position, placed by Haldren, supports a respected 501(c)(3) nonprofit in the Los Angeles area. The incoming leader will take over from a long-serving incumbent retiring at year-end, with a brief handover period across November and December. From January, they will assume sole responsibility for the organisation's full finance function, averaging around 10 to 12 hours per week depending on the financial calendar.
The role spans daily and bi-monthly operations, monthly close and reporting, governance obligations including Finance Committee and Board presentations, and an annual cycle covering budgets, audits, Form 990 and Form 5500 filings, and 403(b) administration. The team is small and collaborative, and the Finance Director will serve as a trusted adviser to the Executive Director.
- Record deposits, process accounts payable, prepare invoices, and run bi-monthly payroll from timesheets
- Execute the full month-end close including bank and investment reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and fixed asset schedules
- Prepare monthly financial statements, finance packets, and actual-to-budget variance reviews
- Present financial reports to the Finance Committee and Board, and attend Board meetings
- Lead the annual audit preparation, liaise with external auditors, and coordinate Form 990 and Form 5500 submissions
- Maintain and update the internal controls policy manual and advise the Executive Director on financial matters
- Prior experience as a Controller or Finance Director with hands-on, end-to-end accounting responsibility
- Proven skills in budgeting, cash flow forecasting, variance analysis, and financial statement preparation
- Experience preparing audit schedules and working directly with external auditors
- Working knowledge of Form 990, Form 5500, 403(b) plan administration, and workers' compensation audits
- Confidence presenting financial information to committees and governing boards
- Ability to work independently and manage a variable, deadline-driven workload within a small team
