Fractional Director of Engineering (Embedded Systems)

This fractional Director of Engineering role requires part-time on-site presence at the company's downtown Calgary office. The director will oversee embedded software and hardware initiatives, define technical strategy, and guide the engineering team across firmware, electronics, IoT, and cloud-connected systems. The position suits an experienced technical leader who wants a flexible engagement with genuine influence over how engineering is practised.

• Define and direct embedded system architecture and key technical decisions across active projects
• Review and optimise hardware and software designs to maintain quality and performance standards
• Coordinate cross-functional engineering teams, set priorities, and monitor project progress against timelines and budgets
• Mentor technical staff, support continuous improvement of engineering processes and best practices
• Manage client engagements and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Provide technical oversight across firmware (C/C++), RTOS, Embedded Linux, PCB design, IoT, and product validation

• Demonstrated background in electrical or computer engineering with hands-on embedded systems expertise, including firmware, hardware integration, and relevant development tools
• Strong analytical skills for assessing system performance, troubleshooting complex issues, and making data-informed decisions
• Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams, including coaching, resource planning, and performance support
• Proven project management capability in planning, executing, and delivering embedded projects on time and within scope
• Familiarity with industry standards, safety and regulatory requirements, and quality assurance practices relevant to embedded products
• Based physically in Calgary, AB, with availability for regular on-site collaboration at the downtown office
