An interim HR Director role leading end-to-end people operations for a fully remote nonprofit, partnering with executive leadership on strategy, compliance, recruiting, and benefits across a multi-state workforce.
This interim Director of Human Resources position is with a mission-driven, fully remote nonprofit headquartered in Washington, DC, with approximately 60 staff across multiple states. The organisation blends a professional culture with an approachable, open-door environment and regular employee feedback practices.
The incoming director will own the entire HR function, acting as the internal subject matter expert and strategic partner to executive leadership. The role oversees a two-person HR team and covers benefits, compliance, payroll oversight, recruiting, performance management, compensation analysis, and policy development. Multi-state employment law experience across California, New York, and Puerto Rico is required. The engagement is contract-based with potential to convert based on performance and business need.
- Design and execute HR strategy, programmes, and services across the organisation
- Oversee HRIS platform administration and data integrity, and manage relationships with the outsourced payroll provider
- Direct the full performance review cycle and partner with managers on goal-setting aligned to organisational priorities
- Negotiate and manage employee benefits programmes, liaising with carriers and presenting recommendations to senior leadership and the Board
- Lead full-cycle recruiting efforts and serve as the primary contact for external staffing partners
- Advise leadership on compensation analysis, job architecture, onboarding design, and organisational change, while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local employment regulations
- 10 or more years of progressive HR experience, including prior supervisory responsibility at director level
- Demonstrated expertise in benefits administration, employee relations, and employment law compliance
- Direct experience navigating multi-state employment law, including California, New York, and Puerto Rico
- Working knowledge of HRIS platforms and payroll systems; Paycom experience is an advantage
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or a related field, or equivalent experience; SHRM certification or master's degree is a plus
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to adjust style across audiences and draft clear policy
