Interim Chief Operating Officer & Senior Vice Chancellor
An interim COO and Senior Vice Chancellor role at the University of Kansas, overseeing operational functions across all campuses during a period of organisational transition.
The University of Kansas is seeking an interim COO and Senior Vice Chancellor to report directly to the Chancellor and provide leadership across all operational functions during a transitional period. The interim assignment is anticipated to run for approximately six months, with the possibility of extension. The role sits within a matrixed organisational structure known as "One KU", which relies on cross-functional collaboration to advance the university's academic and research missions.
The COO/SVC will be responsible for ensuring operational areas, including IT and cybersecurity, facilities management, public safety, emergency management, and campus planning, are efficient, compliant, and well-coordinated. The role requires close partnership with the Chancellor and Executive Vice Chancellors to drive institutional strategy and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
- Provide strategic direction and oversight across IT, cybersecurity, facilities management, campus master planning, parking, public safety, and emergency management.
- Partner with the Chancellor and Executive Vice Chancellors to advance critical institutional strategies across all KU campuses.
- Establish and review policies in support of the Chancellor's vision, ensuring systematic and holistic governance.
- Collaborate with university leaders and government agencies to develop and advocate legislative goals.
- Ensure all operational areas comply with applicable regulations, laws, policies, and agreements.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen organisational culture, support strategic growth, and foster an inclusive environment.
- Bachelor's degree in business, operations management, engineering, IT, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 10 years leading large operational or IT organisations within complex higher education, corporate, or public sector environments.
- Demonstrated success operating within matrixed structures alongside senior leaders across multiple functions.
- Executive leadership capabilities encompassing vision, collaboration, personnel management, analytics, and emotional intelligence.
- Proven ability to manage complex organisations in regulated environments.
- Strong relationship-building skills with both internal and external stakeholders.
