Vessel Advisors seeks a fractional Controller with hands-on Sage 100 expertise to own the accounting function for one or more small-to-midsize business clients on a part-time, remote contract basis.
Vessel Advisors is an accounting and advisory firm serving a diverse portfolio of small and mid-sized businesses. The firm is building a bench of independent fractional Controllers with deep Sage 100 expertise to support client engagements on a part-time, contract basis. This is a fully remote independent contractor role open to candidates across the United States, with the possibility of transitioning to a full-time arrangement for the right person.
In this role you will own the accounting function for one or more clients running Sage 100, working closely with client leadership and the firm's fractional CFOs. Both hands-on Sage 100 experience and prior controller experience are required. The role demands the ability to manage multiple remote client engagements simultaneously and communicate financial results clearly to business owners and non-financial stakeholders.
- Lead month-end and year-end close in Sage 100, including reconciliations, accruals, and journal entries
- Prepare accurate, timely financial statements and management reports for client leadership
- Review and improve accounting workflows, internal controls, and Sage 100 configuration across GL, AP, AR, and other modules
- Oversee and mentor client bookkeeping, AP, and AR staff
- Support budgeting, cash flow forecasting, and variance analysis alongside fractional CFOs
- Coordinate with external CPAs on audits, reviews, and tax preparation
- Prior experience as a controller with full ownership of the close and financial reporting (required)
- Hands-on, recent experience in Sage 100 (formerly MAS 90/200), including general ledger and core financial modules (required)
- Strong command of US GAAP, accrual accounting, and account reconciliation
- Advanced Excel skills; familiarity with Sage 100 reporting tools is an advantage
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple client engagements concurrently
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field preferred; CPA is a plus
