An interim controller role supporting not-for-profit clients with accounting operations, financial reporting, audit coordination, and compliance on a contract basis.
This interim controller position sits within BDO USA's Strategic Resources practice, placing experienced finance professionals with not-for-profit clients during periods of transition or elevated workload. The controller takes ownership of daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger management, with particular attention to restricted and unrestricted fund tracking and grant compliance.
The role covers month-end and year-end close, preparation of FASB ASC 958-compliant financial statements, external audit support, and regulatory filings such as IRS Form 990. The successful candidate will also implement internal controls, lead process improvement initiatives, and communicate financial insights directly to client leadership. The schedule is described as sporadic and fluctuating, consistent with an interim contract arrangement.
- Oversee daily accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger, with attention to restricted fund and grant tracking
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes, producing timely financial statements in line with FASB ASC 958 and applicable NFP standards
- Prepare and review financial reports, reconciliations, and supporting schedules for client management and funders
- Coordinate external audits and regulatory filings, including IRS Form 990 and state charity registrations
- Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls and accounting policies appropriate to each client
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis, and identify process improvements to enhance operational efficiency
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; Master's degree in Accounting or Finance preferred
- Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, with at least two years in a supervisory or management role
- Experience in not-for-profit accounting, public accounting, or professional services preferred
- CPA or Certified Nonprofit Accounting Professional (CNAP) designation preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required; familiarity with accounting platforms such as QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage, or SAP preferred
- Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills with the ability to adapt quickly to changing client environments
