Interim Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer
An interim Chief Medical Officer role providing strategic clinical leadership across all medical operations, quality and safety programmes, physician governance, and regulatory compliance for a hospital health system.
UNC Health Nash, an affiliated member of the UNC Health system serving Nash, Edgecombe, Halifax, and Wilson Counties in North Carolina, is seeking an interim Chief Medical Officer. The CMO serves as the senior physician executive, working closely with the CEO, CNO, and board leadership to set clinical strategy, drive quality and safety outcomes, and ensure regulatory compliance across the hospital.
The role carries broad oversight including medical staff credentialing, clinical service-line development, risk management, care management, and contracted medical staff services. The CMO also contributes to clinical budget management in partnership with the CFO and leads continuous improvement initiatives across all patient care functions.
- Oversee quality, safety, and performance management across all medical staff and clinical departments
- Develop and implement a comprehensive clinical strategic plan aligned with the hospital's organisational goals
- Ensure adherence to healthcare regulations and standards including HIPAA, Medicare/Medicaid, and JCAHO requirements
- Manage the medical staff credentialing process and coordinate medical staff committees and governance functions
- Partner with the CFO to manage clinical budgets, resource allocation, and cost-effective service delivery
- Lead organisational change initiatives, foster workforce engagement, and develop clinical leadership capability across teams
- MD or DO from an accredited School of Medicine with current board certification in a clinical discipline
- Minimum of twelve years of clinical experience, including at least ten years in a leadership capacity
- Demonstrated expertise in medical staff governance, credentialing, and regulatory compliance
- Proven ability to develop and execute clinical strategy in partnership with executive and board leadership
- Strong financial acumen with experience managing clinical budgets and contributing to organisational financial performance
- Track record of leading change management and building a culture of quality, safety, and continuous improvement
