A fractional CIO to guide Rare's shift from fragmented local systems to an integrated, scalable technology environment, covering Salesforce grants management, global HRIS selection, Microsoft 365 governance, and an Automation and AI roadmap.
Rare is a global conservation organisation with over 50 years of experience partnering with local communities to steward the lands and waters they depend on. As the organisation scales its impact across biodiverse regions facing climate risk, it is modernising the technology infrastructure that underpins its work in dozens of countries.
The Fractional CIO will lead delivery of four FY27 technology priorities: rolling out Salesforce for grants management, selecting and implementing a global HRIS, providing strategic guidance on the ongoing Microsoft 365 migration, and defining an Automation and Applied AI strategy. This is a hands-on delivery role reporting to the Senior Vice President of Strategy and Organisational Development. The CIO will own outcomes, manage implementation partners, establish technology governance, define data stewardship and security standards, and recommend a sustainable operating model for after the engagement concludes.
- Lead Salesforce grants management design, implementation, and phased rollout, including selecting and managing the implementation partner in collaboration with Development, Finance, and Programs.
- Guide HRIS requirements gathering, vendor selection, contracting, and implementation planning in partnership with the Talent team and other business owners.
- Provide strategic guidance on Microsoft 365 governance, integration, and alignment with Rare's broader technology architecture.
- Establish technology governance covering platform ownership, decision rights, data stewardship, security, privacy, and vendor management across enterprise and country levels.
- Identify practical automation and AI opportunities, making clear recommendations on where to invest, scale, adapt, or stop.
- Recommend a post-engagement technology operating model, including the leadership, staffing, and external support Rare will need to sustain systems independently.
- Demonstrated experience as a senior technology leader delivering complex systems implementations, not advisory engagements.
- Hands-on Salesforce implementation experience, including partner management and grants or programme management use cases.
- Proven ability to lead HRIS selection and implementation processes across a global organisation.
- Strong background in technology governance, data architecture, security, and risk management.
- Experience working with or within non-profit or mission-driven organisations is advantageous.
- Ability to work across cross-functional teams and manage multiple implementation workstreams concurrently within a fractional time commitment.
