The team is early-stage and small, and this role is about building the people infrastructure that allows it to grow with clarity and fairness.
This is a hands-on, advisory engagement. The successful contractor will design pragmatic people systems suited to a team of around ten, with the foresight to ensure those systems hold as headcount grows. The role involves close collaboration with the CEO on hiring decisions, team structure, and culture, and requires sound judgement about when a formal framework genuinely helps versus when it adds unnecessary process. The initial contract runs through end of 2026, with potential to continue. Remote, with some Eastern Time availability expected.
- Design a performance review framework appropriate for a small, early-stage team
- Build compensation bands using market data and define processes for merit increases, promotions, and adjustments
- Design a long-term incentive plan suited to an early-stage company
- Advise the CEO on people decisions including hiring, team structure, and culture
- Provide a sounding board for complex compensation requests and organisational questions
- Identify when to engage legal or tax specialists on people-related matters
- Demonstrated experience building people systems at early-stage software or SaaS startups from 10 to 50+ employees
- Hands-on background in performance review design, compensation banding, and long-term incentive structures
- Strong judgement on when frameworks add value versus unnecessary process overhead
- Pragmatic approach with the ability to keep systems simple and scalable
- Availability for some overlap with Eastern Time business hours
- Experience with cross-border teams, healthcare, or AI companies is an advantage
