Interim Chief Financial Officer

This seven-month interim CFO role is focused on maintaining financial stability and operational continuity for a private foundation while a permanent CFO search is conducted. The position leads a seven-person Finance and Grants Administration function with three direct reports, and requires someone equally capable of advising the President and Board at a strategic level while rolling up their sleeves to deliver critical financial work directly.

Key priorities include delivering the FY2027 operating budget, maintaining audit readiness, overseeing grants administration compliance and payments, and ensuring the organisation is well-positioned for a smooth handover to the incoming permanent CFO. Investment management is outside the scope of this assignment.

• Lead development of the FY2027 operating budget, including forecasting, financial analysis and reporting to support Board decision-making
• Maintain sound internal controls, cash management and regulatory compliance across financial operations
• Lead audit preparation and ensure all financial reporting is accurate, timely and audit-ready
• Provide active oversight of grants administration, including financial due diligence, grant payments and compliance controls
• Coach and direct the Finance and Grants teams, maintaining momentum on critical priorities throughout the assignment
• Assess financial risks and priorities quickly, establish credibility with senior leadership, and prepare a clear transition plan for the incoming CFO

• Significant senior financial leadership experience within a nonprofit or mission-driven organisation
• Private foundation experience strongly preferred, including familiarity with relevant tax, regulatory and governance requirements
• Strong expertise across budgeting, forecasting, FP&A, accounting, internal controls and external audit
• Demonstrated experience partnering with a CEO or President, Board and Finance Committee
• Proven ability to lead through organisational transition and operate effectively under ambiguity
• Strong team coaching skills and a collaborative, hands-on leadership style suited to small professional teams
