Fractional CFO - Legal & Professional Services

Law Firm Velocity's CFO Services team partners with law firm owners across the country, delivering fractional CFO support that turns financial complexity into clear, actionable insight. As the primary strategic finance contact for a portfolio of clients, you will own client relationships end-to-end, lead monthly and quarterly financial reviews, and guide owners through significant decisions including partner compensation, hiring, pricing, office leases, and financing arrangements.

The role is advisory in nature. Bookkeeping and Financial Analysts handle day-to-day close work, freeing your time for the analysis and counsel only a CFO can provide. You will build and maintain cash flow forecasts, budgets, and financial models, analyse law-firm-specific KPIs such as realization, utilization, and WIP/AR aging, and surface risks and opportunities before owners encounter them. You will also direct and mentor supporting Financial Analysts.

• Serve as the primary fractional CFO for a portfolio of law firm clients, owning each relationship from expectation-setting through ongoing advisory
• Lead monthly and quarterly financial review meetings, translating results into prioritised action items for firm owners
• Build and maintain cash flow forecasts, budgets, and decision-ready financial models tailored to each firm
• Analyse law-firm KPIs including realization, utilization, collection rates, WIP/AR aging, and trust account activity
• Guide clients through key decisions on partner compensation, staffing, fee structures, leases, and financing
• Direct and mentor supporting Financial Analysts, setting priorities and reviewing their work

• 10+ years of progressive finance experience, including 3+ years as a CFO, Controller, or equivalent finance lead with direct P&L responsibility
• Deep FP&A capability across forecasting, budgeting, cash flow modelling, variance analysis, and scenario planning
• Experience in a fractional, multi-client, or advisory capacity, or a demonstrated ability to manage multiple client relationships simultaneously
• Law firm or professional services finance background strongly preferred, including familiarity with realization, utilization, IOLTA trust accounting, and partner compensation
• Strong command of QuickBooks Online and Excel or Google Sheets; experience with FP&A platforms such as Jirav or Fathom is a plus
• Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting required; CPA, CMA, or MBA is advantageous
