A part-time interim CFO engagement providing executive financial leadership to a well-established nonprofit during a period of organisational transition, covering reporting, controls, budgeting, and Board advisory.
A well-established nonprofit organisation is seeking an experienced Interim CFO to provide executive-level financial leadership on a part-time, contract basis (approximately 20 hours per week), with occasional in-office presence in Alexandria, VA. The engagement covers a period of leadership transition and requires someone who is equally comfortable advising the Board and Finance Committee as they are getting hands-on with day-to-day financial operations.
The role encompasses GAAP-compliant reporting, budgeting and forecasting, cash flow management, grants and restricted fund accounting, audit support, and internal controls. The successful candidate will assess the existing finance function, identify risks and improvement opportunities, and provide mentorship to finance staff throughout the transition period.
- Provide interim financial leadership and oversight across all areas of the organisation's finance function
- Assess current financial operations, reporting, controls, processes, and staffing, and recommend practical improvements
- Partner with the CEO/Executive Director and senior leadership on financial strategy and decision-making
- Prepare and present financial reports, forecasts, and analysis to executive leadership and the Board/Finance Committee
- Oversee budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, restricted funds, and grants accounting in line with nonprofit standards
- Support the annual audit, ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles, and mentor finance staff through the transition
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field, with 10 or more years of progressive financial leadership experience at CFO, VP Finance, Controller, or equivalent level
- Significant nonprofit accounting and finance experience, including financial statements, budgets, audits, grants, and restricted fund management
- Strong hands-on proficiency with Sage Intacct (required) and advanced Excel skills
- Advanced understanding of GAAP and nonprofit-specific accounting principles
- Demonstrated experience presenting financial information to Boards and executive leadership teams
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to operate effectively in an interim, transition-focused environment
