Interim Accounting Director - Non-Profit

LHH Recruitment Solutions is sourcing an Interim Accounting Director for a large global non-profit headquartered in New York. The engagement runs for six or more months, with a primarily remote schedule and one day per week required onsite in Midtown Manhattan. The successful candidate will assume broad oversight of the accounting function during a transitional period, ensuring financial integrity and reporting accuracy throughout.

The role spans grant accounting, general ledger management, AP/AR, payroll, and the full monthly, quarterly, and year-end close cycle. The director will lead audit preparation, coordinate Form 990 filings, support budgeting and forecasting, and identify opportunities to strengthen internal controls and streamline accounting workflows.

• Oversee all accounting functions including grant accounting, general ledger, AP/AR, payroll, and audit compliance
• Lead preparation of P&L statements, balance sheets, cash flow reports, and management reporting packages
• Manage monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes to deliver timely and accurate financial statements
• Ensure adherence to non-profit GAAP standards and internal accounting policies
• Coordinate external audit readiness and prepare Form 990 filings
• Identify process gaps, strengthen internal controls, and implement improvements across accounting workflows

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA preferred
• Five or more years of experience within a large non-profit organisation with revenues exceeding $100M
• Advanced Excel skills including pivot tables and VLOOKUPs; financial modelling experience advantageous
• Strong analytical, organisational, and communication capabilities
• Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, transitional environment with hands-on delivery expectations
